The legs retract into the molded tray for travel and storage. What I like most about this bag is how easy it is to get around airports. It seems there are quite a few airports under construction and getting from the terminal to rental cars can be a chore within itself. It rolls better than my carry-on! But this bag holds my cart bag, 2 pairs of shoes, full ball compartment, and my golf attire without going over the 50lbs limit. I don't use a backbone, I just remove my driver & 3W heads and use my clothes as extra padding.I've been on at least 5 trips with this bag and even with it being soft sided, I haven't had any protection issues. Best purchase besides my clubs. Must have!
